Twilight by Stephenie Meyer.

I genuinely liked this book.  At first, but after Stephenie Meyer turned it into a multimillion dollar franchise I have turned to hate the name Twilight.  She sold out.  Big time.  They butchered it, and plus I genuinely dislike everyone who heard of it because of the movie, saw the movie, decided they liked it, read the books, and then decided they hated the movie.
Onto the book, it opens up with Bella Swan on her way to Forks, Washington to live with her father Charlie.  You know, I really don't want to go over the story line.  I'll just tell you what I think of the characters.

Bella Swan:  smart girl, but willing to put up with an obsessive, possessive, violent, angry, controlling boyfriend.  I've lost my respect for her.  She should have just let herself move on after he left.  She's obviously a good person since she ran halfway around the world to save his pathetic ass, but she only went because she thought she couldn't live without him.  She's so dependent on one person, it's ridiculous.  This is one of those stories where I wish the main characters died.

Edward Cullen:  J.A.C.K.A.S.S.  He's like, "Oh, hey I really like this girl.  I think I'm going to stalk her and not let any other guy near her because even though I barely know anything about her, I want her to be in my life forever."  God, I hate and love him.  He can be unbelievably sweet but he does it in this awkward manner.  I know some people will say, "Oh, that's just because he's from a different time."  No, it's because he's creepy.  My grandfather was born in a similar time and he isn't creepy.

Jacob Black:  In my mind, he's like Edward, but not as creepy and possessive.  He's angry but he tried to control it and he's okay with letting Bella hang out with other guys as long as it isn't a vampire.

Those are the only characters that I feel like describing, but I'll leave you with a parting note:  book two, New Moon, is my favorite because Edward leaves.

  1. I found this to be a fair, and insightful review. It almost made me feel bad for being a bit of a Twilight hater. I tried reading the first book because my younger sister enjoyed it, but I just couldn't get into it. Watched the first two movies, so between that and my attempt at the book I completely agree with your description of the characters.

I may give the books another chance at some point in time.

  2. New Moon was my favorite too! For that same reason.
